Applications of Optical Variable Pigments in Anti-counterfeiting Printing

2025-12-10

Optical Variable Pigments are typically composed of multi-layered thin-film structures (such as multi-layered metal oxide or polymer films). By precisely controlling the thickness (nanometer level) and refractive index of each layer, specific wavelengths of light are interfered with, resulting in different colors reflected at different angles. This color change is continuous, reversible, and cannot be reproduced by scanning or copying.

Application in Anti-counterfeiting Printing:

• Currency and Securities: Security threads, partial patterns, or numbers on banknotes of various countries use optical color-changing ink, exhibiting a sudden color change when tilted, effectively preventing counterfeiting.

• Magnetic Optical Variable Pigments further incorporates magnetic field response functionality, allowing patterns to dynamically change under the influence of an external magnetic field. This is applied to new banknotes in countries such as South Africa and China, enhancing the anti-counterfeiting level.

• Important marking areas on stamps, checks, bonds, etc.

• Documents and Identity Documents: Anti-counterfeiting patterns or text on passports, ID cards, and driver's licenses.

• Dynamic anti-counterfeiting features on official documents such as visas and official seals.

• Anti-counterfeiting Labels for High-End Goods

• Outer packaging labels for luxury goods (bags, watches), tobacco and alcohol, and cosmetics.

• Pharmaceutical regulatory codes, warranty labels for electronic products, etc.

• Brand Protection and Traceability
Combining QR codes or digital watermarks to achieve dual protection of "visual anti-counterfeiting + digital verification".

• Used for anti-counterfeiting and traceability of high-value industrial components (such as aerospace and automotive parts).

Technological Advantages

• Easy to Identify
The public does not need special tools; simple tilting and observation are sufficient to initially verify authenticity.

• Difficult to Replicate
The Nano scale multi-layered structure production process is complex and requires high-level equipment, making it difficult for small workshops to imitate.

• Strong Compatibility
Can be combined with traditional printing processes such as gravure printing, screen printing, and offset printing; it can also be used for inkjet printing or laser marking.

• Good Durability
Most optically variable pigments are light-resistant, weather-resistant, and abrasion-resistant, suitable for long-term circulation and use.
